The finished thread is usually rolled into a ball and then used for either knitting (above),
crochet, needlework or to weave into fabric, rugs, etc.. The frontier woman below is

Linen thread may be woven into fabrics or used to make fine lace like the bobbin lace below.
Cotton thread is usually used for fabrics or for needlework threads.
Women in this area wove elaborate overshot coverlets from their hand-spun thread. "Overshot" refers to the threads that go over the top of the fabric to make the pattern.

Fine laces were make either on a lace pillow (above) or with
a needle and thread. Early laces were made with linen thread.
A fine lace like that to the left might take years to make.
