1894 Bloomer Costume

Girls usually wore dresses, but when
the bicycle became popular, some girls
and women wore bloomer suits. The
bloomers were less likely to get caught
in the bicycle chain than a skirt.

Ladies Standard Pattern Magazine
During the 1880s-90s, "Little Lord
Fauntleroy"
suits were popular for boys. At
least, the suits were popular with mother. Little
boys probably didn't like them very much.
Some of the suits were made of black velvet
and had ruffles on the shirts. They were named
after the main character in the book
Little
Lord Fauntleroy.

Sailor suits were also very popular for both
girls and boys.

Left & Right: 1895 boy's suits from the
Montgomery Ward Catalog. The suit on the
right has a kilt (skirt) and is for a younger boy.
While little boys were suffering through
their velvet suits, little girls were
adorable in delicate dresses.

Little girls still wear clothes similar to
this today for special occasions. The
type of sewing that you find on many of
these lacy dresses is called
"French
Hand Sewing."
