1880 Children from La Mode
Illustree

During the 1880s, little girls' dresses
were long and narrow. Notice the
pleats at the bottoms of the girls' skirts.
The little girl in this picture is Mary
Crowe. Her dress, while not as fancy
as the dresses shown in the fashion
plate, is still similar in design. Mary
lived in what is now Webster Parish,
Louisiana.
Babies and toddlers from Harper's
Bazar 1880.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, mothers
often dressed their babies in "long clothes." These
long dresses often looked like the christening
dresses of today, but babies wore them all the
time. People thought that the long skirts kept the
baby warm, and the dresses were often
embroidered and tucked very beautifully.

When the baby began to toddle, it was dressed
in "short clothes."

The two women wearing bonnets in this
illustration are nursemaids. Wealthy families often
had a nursemaid to care for small children. A
governess cared for, and sometimes taught, older
children.
