These  children are wearing styles popular in 1864. Notice the little boys' knee-pants suits. The little boy on the
far right's suit looks Russian-inspired. Badmitton (or battledore and shuttlecock, as it was called then) was a
popular game.

From the fashion magazine
La Mode Ilustree, 1864.
This picture shows little girls playing with their
dolls. In the
1870s, women's dresses had
large bustles in the back of the skirt. Even
little girls' dresses had bows on the back.

Some of these girls are playing with
fashion
dolls.
In the 1860s and 1870s, most dolls
looked like grown women, like Barbie today,
rather than like little girls. Unlike Barbie,
though, these fashion dolls often had
elaborate clothes made by dressmakers. The
dolls had real gold jewelry and girls could buy
tiny accessories- from leather gloves to opera
glasses- for their dolls. Today, these
expensive dolls are prized by adult collectors.

One of the little boys is wearing a pleated kilt
or skirt, while the older boy is dressing up for
a play.
